Zainab Johnson Sets Netflix Date for 'Toxically Optimistic' Special

Zainab Johnson's second hour of stand-up is going to Netflix.
Toxically Optimistic will premiere on the streamer on 27 October. Deadline reported the title and date.
Johnson wrote, performed, directed and co-produced the special herself. That is a full sweep of credits for a comedy special, meaning a filmed stand-up set released as a single programme. One person shapes the jokes, the performance and the way it is shot.
The special is produced by Higher Ground, the organisation founded in 2018 by former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Jessie Dicovitsky, Head of TV at Higher Ground, is executive producer, meaning she supervised the project on behalf of the company. Higher Ground has backed the hour from stage to screen.
The material started on stage in Scotland. Johnson developed the hour at the Edinburgh Fringe, the large arts festival where many comedians test a full-length show before touring or filming it. That Fringe run was nominated for Best Comedy Show at The List Festival Awards. The Netflix hour carries that stage show to a global streaming audience.
Viewers may know Johnson from Upload. She starred across all four seasons of the Prime Video comedy series. Her debut hour, Hijabs Off, was released on Prime Video in 2023. She also has a prior Netflix credit as co-host of the 2020 reality series 100 Humans, an unscripted show built around experiments with real participants.
Her other television credits include Late Night with Seth Meyers, NBC's Last Comic Standing and HBO's All Def Comedy. On the live circuit, she has performed at Just for Laughs Montreal, the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Edinburgh. She is represented by CAA, Avalon USA and Knol Hanly Garrett.
Higher Ground brings a long awards record to the project. Since its 2018 founding it has collected three Oscar nominations and one win, 12 Emmy nominations and three Grammy nominations, as reported by Deadline. Its screen credits include Leave the World Behind, Crip Camp, Rustin and American Symphony.
What makes this stand out is the level of ownership. Johnson holds four key credits on the hour. That keeps the same hand on the writing, the stage performance and the final cut.
For fans, this means a change of home. The first special streamed on Prime Video. The second arrives on Netflix in late October.
