Comedian Zainab Johnson has a new Netflix special, and Michelle Obama is the one who introduces her on stage.

The special is called Toxically Optimistic and was released on October 27. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was produced by Higher Ground, the production company run by Michelle Obama and Barack Obama. It is the first comedy special the company has produced.

In the special, filmed at the Howard Theatre, Michelle Obama walks out to introduce Johnson. A comedy special is a stand-up show, usually one long set performed in front of a live audience and filmed for release. This one is Johnson's second, according to Deadline.

Johnson has spoken about how the connection started. In an interview on The Hollywood Reporter's podcast I'm Having an Episode, she talked about finding a champion in Michelle Obama. She described a 2024 get-out-the-vote event in Atlanta, where events like this one are held to encourage people to register and turn out to vote. Johnson said Obama recognised her by name there. She said Obama hugged her and praised her special to Shonda Rhimes, the television writer and producer.

That moment is the thread running through the story. A former first lady had seen a stand-up set, and that set led to a production deal with a company that now has its name on the credits. For Johnson, the special is the next step after her earlier work.

Viewers can find Toxically Optimistic on Netflix, the streaming service that carries it. Netflix sets its own viewing figures for titles on the platform, and none have been reported for this special yet.
