Netflix has paused Hunting Gary Glitter, its three-part documentary series about the former pop star, weeks before it was due to launch on 14 October.

The company said it recently became aware of new legal information. That information prompted the hold. No replacement date has been announced.

In a statement, Netflix said it cannot share further detail at this time but will provide an update as soon as it is in a position to do so, Deadline reported on 23 September. The wording is brief. It leaves the October launch suspended rather than cancelled.

The series is made by Voltage TV and is told across three episodes, meaning three instalments rather than a single film. It follows journalists who pursued Glitter over several years, alongside survivors who speak on camera. Advance material also framed the story as a long arc from a 1997 conviction, through a period living outside Britain, to eventual imprisonment, as noted by Yahoo Entertainment. Netflix released a trailer in mid-September, with Rolling Stone among the outlets covering the 14 October date.

Glitter is the stage name of Paul Francis Gadd. He was convicted in 1999 of downloading child sexual abuse material. Court proceedings around him are continuing. Gadd appeared by videolink — live video rather than in person — before a London court while serving prison time for other offences. He pleaded not guilty to eight allegations of sexual abuse involving a girl aged between eight and 11.

A pause of this kind removes a programme from the release schedule. It does not erase the episodes themselves. For titles dealing with live legal issues, broadcasters and streamers often hold a finished programme when new information could affect court proceedings or create legal risk. Netflix has given no further explanation beyond its short statement.

Hunting Gary Glitter is not Netflix's first British true-crime documentary of this type. The service previously released Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story, about the late broadcaster Jimmy Savile.

For viewers, this means a wait. A series that had a trailer and a transmission date now has neither, until Netflix says otherwise.
