Ted Danson's late-life sleuth is taking his last case. Netflix will end A Man on the Inside with Season 3, Variety reported on 23 September. The decision was finalised before the new run airs, sparing the show a spell on the bubble, meaning a renewal still undecided.

Season 3 is now in production in San Francisco, California. Netflix renewed the series in March after Season 2 debuted in January, setting up the third run as its closer.

The series was created by Mike Schur. It stars Danson as Charles Nieuwendyk, a retiree pulled into undercover investigative work, and is based on the documentary The Mole Agent. Universal Television is the studio.

Eight series regulars are back for the final run. Alongside Danson, the returning cast includes Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, Eugene Cordero, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sally Struthers and Mary Steenburgen.

Season 3 adds eight guest stars in new roles. Bernadette Peters plays Coco Van Beck, a grand dame of San Francisco society who hires Charles to find who is sabotaging her philanthropic work. Annette O'Toole plays Kitt, one of Coco's oldest friends, while Christopher McDonald plays Leland, Coco's playboy vineyard-owner third ex-husband.

The wider circle around that case is filling out fast. Diedrich Bader plays real estate developer Mark Delaurio, who has clashed with Coco. Nick Offerman plays Jack Spencer, one of Coco's employees with an interest in Charles's investigation, with Rachel Dratch as Coco's assistant Maud. Stephen Root plays Dave, Charles's estranged brother, and Jessica St. Clair plays Chloe, a friend helping Emily through a new phase of parenthood.

The show opened strongly on Netflix's own measure. It debuted at No. 1 on the company's English TV List with 6.9 million views in the week of 18 November, Netflix said. It followed that with 7 million views and a No. 3 placing in the week of 25 November, Netflix said. Views here mean hours viewed divided by runtime, the streamer’s standard list metric.

For fans, this means a proper ending is built into the schedule. Three seasons. One last investigation. And a crew that knows where the story stops.
