Discord brings back age checks with less invasive options

Discord is switching its age checks back on. The chat platform said the revised system will roll out to everyone over the course of this week.

It follows a pause announced in February after strong criticism from users. The original plan would have asked people to prove their age with a photo of government-issued ID or a video recording of their face, sent to an outside verification firm.

The new approach starts with a guess. Discord automatically estimates age from signals such as how long an account has existed and the types of servers it takes part in. It said it does not look at messages, calls or other content to make that estimate, Eurogamer reported.

Most people will never notice. Discord said more than 90% of users will not have to confirm their age at all.

Those placed in the adult range, aged 18 and over, will see no change. Accounts placed in the teen group, aged 13 to 17, will get extra safety protections by default. That means age-restricted content, spaces and settings stay blocked.

Only the remainder will be asked to verify. That step no longer centres on ID photos and face scans.

Co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy said the updated system offers options that are less invasive. He described the teen protections as using the most privacy-preserving approach the company could build.

The alternatives include entering credit card details or letting the Apple App Store or Google Play Store share an age rating with Discord. Discord calls this age assurance, a broad term for methods that estimate or confirm how old a user is. Its official post on the change, titled Safer for Teens, Same Discord for Adults and published on 23 September 2026, says the revamped solution includes methods that do not require an ID or selfie, Discord said.

The relaunch caps months of testing. Discord tried extra confirmation methods from June to August 2026 to give users more choice.

The wider timeline stretches back to 9 February 2026, when Discord announced enhanced teen safety features from San Francisco. It then delayed the global rollout of age assurance until the second half of 2026 after hearing feedback from users. Since then, Discord said it has launched age assurance in Brazil and Texas.
