Discord starts automatic age checks, with FanDuel ads tested in US

Discord has started sorting its users by age without asking most of them for ID.
The rollout began in the week to 23 September 2026, under a system Discord calls age assurance. It places accounts into two groups, teen aged 13 to 17 and adult aged 18 and older, and then limits what teen accounts can see and change. Adults see no change to their Discord experience. GameSpot
The plan was first announced in February 2026, with a global rollout expected from the following month. Discord later delayed full implementation to add more checks that do not rely on biometric scans or digital ID systems.
Most people will never notice the check happening. Discord states more than 90% of users will not be asked to confirm their age, because the system estimates age in the background and only asks for proof when it cannot decide or when a user wants access to age-restricted content.
That estimate uses how an account behaves on Discord, not what a person says in private. Factors include how long the account has existed, servers joined and games played. Discord states it does not look at users' messages, calls or other content to determine age group, and no single server decides the outcome. Discord
The model behind it is a machine-learning system called XGBoost, a tree-based ensemble method that combines many simple decision trees to reach a result. Discord states its use of multiple account signals matches what is possible with biometrics for accuracy.
Its strongest signal is what Discord calls User Embeddings, built with a technique named Discord Entity-Relationship Embeddings, or DERE. In plain terms, it maps how an account fits into Discord's social graph. Discord states these embeddings are built purely from the structure of connections and do not use usernames, profile content, message content or other user-generated content.
Other inputs include account metadata such as account tenure, subscription history and email or phone verification status. Engagement metrics are limited to aggregated counts, such as number of active days in the past month, number of servers owned and number of messages sent, never the content. Community context looks at the categories of communities a user joins, based on a server's name and description. System and platform metadata covers operating system, browser type and hardware platform.
Discord states it selected features to capture normal user behaviour while intentionally excluding signals that could introduce demographic bias or leave the system open to manipulation. The model also produces feature-importance rankings, which support ongoing auditing.
The result is private. A user's age group is not shown on their profile and is not visible to other members in a server. Users can check their own status at User Settings > Account Status. Discord stated the automatic rollout would occur over the course of a week and might take a few days to reach accounts.
For players, this means the teen experience stays familiar with firmer edges. Teen accounts keep messaging, voice calls and participation in non-age-restricted servers, but are blocked from age-restricted content, spaces and settings. Discord requires all users to be at least 13, and states the majority do not access age-restricted content.
Anyone asked to prove age has options beyond a face scan or ID. Verification without ID or video is possible through Apple Pay, Google Play, Google Wallet, AgeKey or a credit card number. The background estimation model is not available in the United Kingdom and Australia, so users there use other assurance routes. Discord stated it had already launched age assurance solutions in Texas and Brazil.
The same week brought a separate talking point in the United States. Sponsored ads for FanDuel, a fantasy sports and betting operator, appeared for American Discord users. Discord said the FanDuel sponsorship was a limited test in the United States.
Discord's policies prohibit ads for traditional real-money gaming, including casinos and sportsbooks. Discord said FanDuel brand ads and Daily Fantasy Sports ads, contests based on building virtual teams, are intended for adults and it uses age-group signals to exclude teens. FanDuel's own terms for its Discord promotion limit entry to people aged at least 21 and physically present in listed states including Arizona, Colorado and Connecticut.
