Bungie is opening the vault.

The studio is working to bring removed Destiny 2 campaigns, raids and destinations back into the game, with all unvaulted additions free for everyone, including players who never owned them originally, according to Forbes reporter Paul Tassi citing sources inside Bungie Forbes.

Destiny 2 is a live-service game, sold once and then updated in seasons after launch. Bungie created the Destiny Content Vault, which holds all destinations and activities from both Destiny 1 and Destiny 2, to rotate older material out of the active game Bungie. That process removed the vanilla campaign from Destiny 2.

The return list centres on story campaigns. Those slated to be unvaulted include Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken, as detailed in a Forbes article published on 22 September 2026 titled 'Here's Everything Being Unvaulted In Destiny 2's Revival' Forbes.

A lot will stay vaulted. Live-service seasons that ran alongside the removed content will not return, and seasonal events are not included. There is no indication that activities introduced by seasons will return, though reporting notes some could come back later as standalone activities.

Smaller competitive maps face longer odds. Not every Strike, Crucible or Gambit map is expected to return, with higher chances for Strikes that have narrative hooks. A Strike is a short co-operative mission for three players, while Crucible and Gambit are player-versus-player and hybrid modes.

The unvaulting does not mean a restart. It does not signal a return to regular Destiny 2 development, and no further patches are planned before the unvaulting except ones addressing major bugs, according to details reported by Eurogamer on 24 September 2026 Eurogamer. Tassi stated that Monument of Triumph was the end-of-service for the live part of Destiny 2. Eurogamer also reported that almost everyone managing Destiny at Bungie was laid off.

Timing is still loose. Tassi estimated the unvaulting would arrive sometime next year. Bungie has done this before on a smaller scale, announcing that unvaulting would start in Year 4 with the return of the Cosmodrome, its three strikes, and the Vault of Glass raid. The current round of reporting began with a Forbes article published on 21 September 2026 titled 'Destiny Lives: All Content To Be Unvaulted And Future Games Planned', followed by the 22 September list and a follow-up published on 23 September 2026 titled 'More Information About Bungie's Destiny 2 Content Unvaulting Plans'. PC Gamer described the unvaulting as a studio-saving emergency decision because updates for Marathon were never going to be enough PC Gamer.

For fans, this means old stories could be playable again without buying old expansions. The wait is for a date, and for Bungie to confirm exactly what makes the cut.
