Princess Kate swaps clutch so Tom Cruise can hold her hand at Digger premiere

The Princess of Wales switched her clutch bag from one hand to the other so Tom Cruise could hold her hand and help her down the stairs. She arrived with the Prince of Wales at the Digger world premiere and Royal Film Performance in London on 22 September. The night put royalty and Hollywood on the same red carpet.

Cruise stars in Digger. He reached out as Kate approached the steps into the venue. She moved her bag across to free her hand, and he steadied her on the way down, HELLO! reported.

William walked just behind them as they made their way inside. It was a small moment. The cameras caught it instantly.

It felt familiar to regular watchers of royal premieres. Cruise had done the same for Kate at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in London in 2022. He again offered his hand on the stairs that night, and four years later the gesture was repeated almost exactly.

Cruise spoke affectionately about the couple at this year's premiere. "I just love them. They are lovely people and I have great respect for them," he said. The words were simple and warmly received.

Kate wore a purple gown by Jenny Packham for the evening. The floor-length dress stood out under the premiere lights. She carried a small clutch to match the formal dress code of a royal gala. Her look was finished and polished from head to toe.

Her jewellery carried family history. Around her neck was the Queen Mother's Amethyst Sautoir Necklace, a long necklace centred on a large purple stone. In her ears were Princess Diana's Collingwood Pearl Drop earrings, pearl drops first worn by William's late mother.

William and Kate also posed for photographs with David Beckham and his sons Romeo and Cruz. The group stood together on the carpet before the screening began. The Royal Film Performance, a gala screening held to support film and television charities, often brings senior royals together with stars and guests.

What makes this stand out is how little needed to be said. A bag swapped from right to left. A hand offered on a staircase. For fans following the night, it was an easy, human exchange in the middle of full premiere ceremony.
