Taylor Swift previews 'Patient Zero' video ahead of VMAs premiere

Taylor Swift has shared the first glimpse of the music video for her new single “Patient Zero”. A 13-second preview premiered on CBS Mornings and on Swift’s Instagram feed on Sept. 24, according to Billboard. The teaser stars Swift alongside actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.
Swift directed the video herself. The full video will premiere during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27. The VMAs, the annual US awards show for music videos organised by MTV, will host the first full screening, meaning viewers will see it debut during the broadcast.
Swift will also be honoured at that ceremony. She will receive the first-ever Artist Director Honors, a new honour recognising her work behind the camera. She enters the night with nominations in 11 categories.
CBS Mornings reported that Emmanuel Lubezki worked as cinematographer on the shoot. A cinematographer leads decisions on camerawork and lighting. That credit was confirmed in its broadcast coverage of the preview.
The song “Patient Zero” will be released on Friday. A single is a song put out on its own, often to introduce a larger project. Here it leads “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore”, an expanded edition of her recent album, which is a re-release that adds extra songs to the original track list.
The Encore adds four bonus tracks, meaning songs beyond the original edition. They are “Patient Zero”, “Cleveland!”, “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon”. CBS News reported in a video titled “Taylor Swift announces new single, ‘Patient Zero’” that the song will arrive on Friday, while a second explainer covers both the single and the deluxe version of “The Life of a Showgirl”.
CBS News correspondent Jo Ling Kent reported the outlet’s coverage of the announcement. CBS Mornings billed the teaser as an exclusive first look at the video. It also posted a clip titled “First look at Taylor Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’” with a runtime of 1 minute 39 seconds.
Swift announced the single on Tuesday. The track is her first new song since her wedding in summer 2026. The announcement set up a quick turnaround to the Friday release.
For fans, this means a busy few days. New music arrives on Friday. Then the full video follows on Sunday.
