Taylor Swift premieres self-directed 'Patient Zero' video at 2026 VMAs

Taylor Swift premiered her video for “Patient Zero” at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27, directing the clip herself and appearing with actors Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Johnson and Farrell star alongside Swift in the video. The debut came during the ceremony itself, according to Billboard.
The night also brought Swift a separate honour. She received the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the same ceremony. Inaugural means first ever. The prize recognises work behind the camera, alongside performing on stage.
“Patient Zero” belongs to The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. It is one of four new songs on that collection. The others are “Cleveland!”, “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon”. That groups four additions together under the Encore name.
People who did not see the live premiere can catch up on streaming. The video is available to watch on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. All three are music streaming services that also carry video. Streaming here means watching on demand over the internet, so viewers do not need a separate television broadcast to find it.
On a music video, the director guides performance, camera and story. Swift holds that credit on “Patient Zero”. The camera work was handled by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, the person in charge of photography and lighting. Jil Hardin served as producer, the role that organises the schedule, budget and day-to-day running of a set.
The wider team covered the look, pace and finish of the shoot. Production designer Ethan Tobman oversaw the appearance of sets and locations, building the world viewers see on screen. Editor Chancler Haynes assembled the final cut, shaping order and pace after filming ended. Eric Topper worked as first assistant director, who keeps the shoot running on the day.
Visual effects were provided by Parliament. Merman and Taylor Swift Productions were the production companies behind the video, providing the organisation and resources for the shoot, as listed on taylorswift.com.
For fans, this means one night delivered both the song’s visual and a directing prize. The video arrived first on an awards stage, then moved straight to streaming for repeat viewing.
