Randy Rainbow reworks Oklahoma! tune for Trump parody
Randy Rainbow has aimed his latest musical parody at Donald Trump, with a new song called “Dummy With the Wig on Top.”
The video was posted on Thursday, Sept. 24 and reworks “Surrey With the Fringe on Top” from the musical Oklahoma!, according to Billboard. A parody keeps the melody of a known song and swaps in new words. In this case the Broadway tune carries lyrics about US politics.
Rainbow performs the number in cowboy garb. The costume fits the western roots of the original show. The new version satirises Trump’s appearance and mental state.
The song also addresses the people around the president. It says they ignore what it calls his “corpse-like appearance.” It then adds the lines “Scrambled brains and slurred incoherence.”
In another section Rainbow speaks to Trump directly. The line runs: “Thanks to your incompetent leadership, eggs are now a luxury item and AI is going to kill us all before Rihanna drops a new album!” It names grocery prices and artificial intelligence, the technology that generates text, images and other media. It ends with a joke about the wait for new music from singer Rihanna.
Two further lines keep the country twang of the original. One is “Can’t keep up with wars he’s a-startin’.” The other is “His eyes are yeller, his supremacy’s white.” Both are sung in the same loose, rhyming style as the Oklahoma! number.
For viewers coming to this fresh, the format is the point. A familiar stage melody makes the new lyrics easy to follow. The jokes land line by line, with each verse aimed at a different target.
