MindsEye maker Build a Rocket Boy enters administration

The studio behind MindsEye has called in administrators.
Build a Rocket Boy has submitted an administration filing to the United Kingdom's Companies House. The company has appointed Opus Advisory Group as administrator, an appointment it confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz.
Administration is a formal insolvency process in the UK. Control of the company passes to licensed administrators. They examine the books, deal with creditors, and decide whether the business can be rescued, sold or closed in an orderly way.
The filing was reported by Eurogamer on 25 September 2026. It followed reports of further layoffs at the studio in the week before the filing. Those reports said Build a Rocket Boy was preparing to shut its doors.
Build a Rocket Boy was founded in 2016 by Leslie Benzies, a veteran of the Grand Theft Auto series. Its debut was MindsEye, a shooter that was released in June 2025. That is a gap of nine years between the founding of the studio and the arrival of its first game.
Company records list Mark Michael Gerhard as an active director of Build A Rocket Boy Ltd. The records give the company number as SC537252, with a correspondence address at Caledonian Exchange, 19a Canning Street, Edinburgh. A related company, Build A Rocket Boy Technologies Ltd, is also listed as active.
The launch went badly. Eurogamer awarded MindsEye one star out of five in its review. Studio boss Mark Gerhard later described its arrival as "without doubt, the worst launch in history". He blamed the studio's woes on "organised espionage and corporate sabotage".
The accounts show the financial pressure behind the business. The company reported a £47.5 million operating loss, the loss from its day-to-day trading, and a £36.2 million net loss, the overall shortfall after all costs are counted, for the 12 months ending 30 September. At that date it owed creditors £61.8 million. Creditors is the term for lenders, suppliers, landlords and others owed money.
The studio continued to update the game after release. It put out the Blacklisted update for MindsEye in April 2026. Gerhard described that update as "a big step forward for MindsEye, and our studio".
What makes this stand out is the distance travelled. A new studio led by a well-known figure from one of the biggest series in games drew wide attention before it had published anything. Fifteen months after its first game arrived, its future now rests with outside administrators and the process that follows.
