Honor launched its Magic 9 series in China on September 28, 2026, led by the Magic 9 Pro Max, a phone developed with Arri for mobile video and stills. The Verge

The Pro Max uses a camera island based on the three-lens turret from the 1937 Arriflex 35. It has a circular housing with a knurled texture around the main lens, a finish meant to echo a cinema lens barrel.

For video, the phone shoots in Arri LogC3, a flat profile that holds detail in highlights and shadows for later color work. It includes 14 preset Arri Look LUTs, which are fixed color starting points taken from Arri color science. It also supports the APV 10-bit 4:2:2 codec, a recording format that keeps extra color information so flat footage can be graded in editing software without breaking down.

The rear cameras are high resolution. The main camera is 200 megapixels with a 1/1.28-inch-type sensor. The 3.5x telephoto is also 200 megapixels with a 1/1.4-inch sensor. The ultrawide is 50 megapixels.

For sound and selfies, the phone has a cinema-grade directional microphone for video recording. The front camera uses a square-format sensor that can capture landscape or portrait without turning the phone, so one shot can be framed for horizontal and vertical delivery.

The phone runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip. It has an 8,800mAh battery with up to 40 percent silicon content. Listings point to a 6.8-inch display with 0.98mm bezels, 16 GB RAM and 1024 GB storage. GSMArena

Honor confirmed an international launch is coming but gave no timing or markets in the China announcement. The launch follows a technical collaboration announced with Arri on March 1, 2026, described as a strategic technical collaboration applying cinematic imaging principles to Honor's mobile imaging architecture based on Arri's Image Science. The Magic 9 Pro Max is not Honor's first Arri-linked phone. Honor launched the Honor Robot Phone on August 12, 2026, with a 200MP Agile Gimbal Main Camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 122-degree field of view, and support for 10-bit Arri LogC3 recording in Arri Cinema mode. Honor It was also described as the first smartphone with spinshot, with support for 90-degree and 180-degree modes.

The broader context here helps explain the intent. Phone makers have cycled through Leica, Zeiss, Hasselblad and other optics badges for a decade, often with little change to the imaging stack. In my view Honor is trying something narrower. The circular housing tells a user what the phone is for before it is powered on, and the large telephoto sensor allows cropping and detail at range in addition to optical reach. Log profiles, LUTs and a production codec change how footage moves through editing software, which is harder to imitate than a color tuning. If the LogC3 holds up in testing, and if noise, rolling shutter and heat stay controlled during long 10-bit captures, small crews and independent shooters would have a usable pocket B-camera. I have watched my own children treat vertical and horizontal as the same job rather than two shoots, and the square front sensor fits that habit. The open questions are execution at global pricing, carrier certification and software support, all still undisclosed.
