Tom Westley Steps Down as Essex Captain After Seven Seasons

Tom Westley has stepped down as Essex captain after seven seasons in charge.
The 37-year-old is Essex's longest-serving player. He said captaining the county had been his greatest honour, according to BBC Sport.
The announcement came at the end of a nervy season. Essex drew with Glamorgan in their final match to finish eighth in Division One of the County Championship, the top tier of English domestic red-ball cricket. That is one place above the relegation spots, where the bottom teams drop down a division.
Essex ended the campaign 25 points clear of Leicestershire. Survival is still not certain. Leicestershire were docked 27 points for breaching pitch regulations and have appealed. If all 27 points are returned, Leicestershire will stay up and Essex will go down instead.
Westley took over in January 2020. He succeeded Ryan ten Doeschate, with Essex the reigning county champions at the time.
He never got a first season to defend that title. The County Championship did not take place in 2020 because of the Covid pandemic. Westley instead led Essex to victory in the Bob Willis Trophy, the shortened red-ball competition staged in its place.
The years that followed brought consistency. Essex finished in the top four in 2022, 2023 and 2024. They slipped to sixth in 2025 before this season's fight near the bottom.
For fans, this means a clean break. A new captain will now lead Essex into a fresh chapter, either to rebuild in Division One or to plot an immediate return if the appeal goes against them.
