Jason Gallian has announced he will step down as Essex chairman, a decision he made at the club's annual general meeting on Monday and explained in an open letter published on the Essex Cricket website (BBC Sport; Essex Cricket).

Gallian said the move followed "careful consideration" and told members: "This has not been an easy decision but I believe it is the right one for the club." He will remain on the Essex county board, stepping away from the chairman's role but not from the club itself.

His reasoning is rooted in where he feels he can be most useful. Gallian said his greatest strength, passion and commitment has always been cricket itself, and that he believes he can make his greatest contribution by focusing on supporting Essex's cricket programme and the welfare and development of players.

For Gallian, this is a homecoming of sorts. He finished his playing career at Essex, the county where he built deep ties long before any boardroom role. The shift from chairman to a hands-on cricket focus lets him work closer to the pitch than the boardroom table.

The chairman's post has been unsettled. Gallian took the role on an interim basis the previous year after his predecessor, Anu Mohindru, resigned when he was found to have lied about studying at the University of Oxford (BBC Sport). Gallian's appointment brought a measure of stability after that episode, and his decision to stay on the board ensures continuity through the next transition.

Essex will appoint a new chairman at its next board meeting. In the meantime, the AGM also brought two new faces to the board: Jamas Hodivala KC and Daren Mootoo were both appointed at Monday's meeting (BBC Sport). Their additions broaden the board's composition as the club navigates its next chapter.

For Essex supporters, the headline is less about turbulence and more about a familiar face choosing where he can add the most value. A county that has won multiple Championship titles in recent seasons now has its cricket operations getting direct attention from someone who played the game and cares deeply about those still playing it.
