Minions & Monsters will stream on Peacock from Oct. 28, less than four months after it opened in theatres on July 1, Variety reported.

That is a short hop from cinema to sofa. Films usually play only in theatres first, in what the industry calls the theatrical window, before moving to streaming. This one makes that move in time for the school half-term stretch.

The new film is the seventh instalment in the Despicable Me franchise. That count covers both the main Despicable Me stories built around Gru and the Minions spin-offs built around his small yellow helpers.

The story turns the clock back. It is set in 1920s Hollywood, when studio lots and silent pictures ruled the town. It was directed by Pierre Coffin and Patrick Delage, with Coffin bringing long history to the job as the co-creator of the series and the voice of the Minions themselves.

Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges and Jesse Eisenberg lead the voice cast, the actors who play the animated characters with speech alone. They are joined by Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Trey Parker and George Lucas in supporting roles. Christoph Waltz voices a character called Max, Variety reported.

New viewers get a simple starting point. The wider series began in 2010 with the original Despicable Me, with Steve Carell as Gru, a former villain turned father figure. The most recent chapters before this entry were Minions: The Rise of Gru in 2022, followed by Despicable Me 4 in 2024.

The numbers behind that run are large. Together, the Despicable Me films are the first animated franchise to pass $5 billion in ticket sales at the global box office, meaning cinemas worldwide. That milestone was noted in Variety’s report on the streaming date.

For fans, this means easy access. The July cinema launch caught the summer holidays. The Oct. 28 streaming arrival puts it in living rooms just before Halloween.
