Bebe Rexha says Taylor Swift reached out to support her after designers refused to dress her for the 2019 Grammy Awards.

Rexha retold the story to E! News on the red carpet at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, the annual celebration of music videos organised by MTV, on 27 September. She said Swift made contact after Rexha went public with her struggle to find a gown. E! News

The original dispute dates to January 2019. Rexha posted on Instagram that unnamed designers did not want to dress her for that year's Grammys, where she was up for two nominations. She later said the refusals were because she is a size 8. People

Fellow singer Demi Lovato publicly backed Rexha at the time, amid wide discussion about body standards in red-carpet fashion. Rexha went on to attend the ceremony in a voluminous burgundy ballgown by Shaima Monsoori for the label Monsoori. People

Seven years later, Rexha said Swift's message stayed with her. She told E! News that Swift reached out in part because the two singers are the same age. Billboard

Rexha added that support mattered because of Swift's standing in the industry. To hear from someone at that level made her feel she belonged.

What makes this stand out is how long the memory has lasted. A difficult week of calls and fittings in 2019 became a story Rexha still chooses to tell on a red carpet in 2026.
