Woody Allen will start shooting his latest, still-untitled film in Madrid on Oct. 5, 2026, and has agreed to put “Madrid” in the title, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The title is part of the funding deal. As a condition of Madrid’s financial backing, the production must show the city on screen through a set percentage of exterior scenes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is backed by millions in public funding, Variety reported.

The details were laid out by Raúl Torquemada, director of the Madrid Film Office, the audiovisual office of Madrid’s City Council, in an interview published on Sept. 28, 2026. The office sits inside the council’s Tourism Area, which links filming permits and support to visitor promotion.

That is a record year to build on. Madrid hosted filming of 71 feature films in 2025, beating the previous high of 47 set in 2022, alongside 52 series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. More than 1,025 medium- and large-scale projects were filmed in the city in 2025, Variety reported, citing Madrid Film Office figures.

The office said it provided over 4,100 filming services, a term covering permits, locations help and coordination with city departments, according to the Madrid Film Office. Between 2021 and March 2026, City Council grants for film production, promotion and distribution totalled nearly €15 million ($17 million), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

What makes this stand out is the explicit exchange. The city provides cash and practical help. The film provides Madrid locations, Madrid exteriors and Madrid in the name.
