VMAs surge to 8.43 million viewers for biggest night since 2015

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards averaged a combined 8.43 million viewers on CBS and MTV. That is the biggest VMAs audience in 11 years, since 2015. The number comes from Nielsen Live+same-day fast nationals, which count people who watched live or later that same day, and is up 51% on last year, according to Variety.
CBS carried most of that audience. Its telecast averaged 7.61 million viewers, up 52% from 5.00 million last year. The MTV simulcast, meaning the same live show on a second channel, averaged 686,000 viewers, up 40% from 481,000. An MTV encore, meaning a repeat later in the night, added 142,000 viewers, up 31% from 108,000.
Add those three together and you get the 8.43 million combined total. The split shows where viewing now sits. Broadcast delivered the bulk. Cable added a smaller, loyal slice.
The CBS figure alone beat last year’s entire combined audience. Last year’s show drew 5.60 million viewers across CBS, MTV and an MTV encore on Sept. 7, 2025. That was the show’s first year on CBS and at the time a six-year high, Deadline reported. Its early estimate on the night put viewing at more than 5.5 million.
The longer record still belongs to 2015, when the VMAs drew 12.73 million viewers. The gap is still wide.
The 2026 ceremony aired live on Sept. 27 across CBS, MTV and Paramount+. Madonna and Taylor Swift entered the night as the top nominees and ended it as the biggest winners, Billboard reported. Swift won video of the year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Madonna also opened the show.
LISA and RAYE performed during the programme. Charli xcx and Tyla appeared as presenters, according to Forbes. For viewers at home, that blend of live sets and trophy moments is the familiar VMAs shape.
What makes this stand out is the second-year gain. A new broadcast home lifted the audience in 2025. The 2026 show built on it again.
