All American has played its last down. The CW football drama closed its eight-season run on Monday, with its long-time leading man behind the camera for the farewell.

Daniel Ezra, who portrays Spencer James, directed the series finale, according to Deadline. The episode caps a run produced by Warner Bros. Television that made the series one of the network's longest-running scripted titles.

Ezra played Spencer for six seasons. He left the regular cast in Season 6 and later returned for guest appearances. He had already moved into directing on the show, including its 100th episode, before taking on the finale.

The final episode centres on Spencer's next move. He secures a transfer from New York back to Los Angeles and is present for the birth of his twins with Olivia. The story then jumps forward six years.

That jump takes Spencer to the end of his playing career. The closing sequence finds him lining up in his final Super Bowl before retiring. Ezra discussed directing the episode and saying goodbye to Spencer in an interview with Deadline published on 29 September.

The finale is titled "To Live and Die in L.A.", according to Yahoo. It followed the penultimate episode, Season 8 Episode 12, titled "Finish Line".

The CW lists "Finish Line" as airing on 21 September 2026, with a TV-PG rating and a runtime of 43 minutes, according to The CW. In that episode, KJ risks everything at a showcase while Cassius and Ava worry about his future.

The series is led by showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll, the writer-producer in overall charge of the series. Deadline first revealed trailer footage for Season 8, billed as the final season, in May 2026.

For fans, this means Spencer's story ends closed. He started as a high school prospect caught between two postcodes. He finishes as a husband, a father of twins and a veteran walking away on his own terms.
