Spencer James came home to say goodbye. The CW football drama All American is ending with its eighth and final season, and original star Daniel Ezra directed the series finale and appeared in it as a surprise guest.

Ezra starred as Spencer James for six seasons. Spencer is the Crenshaw teenager from Los Angeles who leaves his neighbourhood team to play football for Coach Billy Baker at Beverly Hills High. Baker, played by Taye Diggs, is written as a Crenshaw High School legend who went on to play professionally.

Both Ezra and Diggs return for the final episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Ezra's appearance was kept secret before broadcast. Diggs had left the regular cast earlier in the run.

The directing job was personal. Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll, the writer-producer in overall charge of the series, wanted Ezra to direct the finale, Ezra said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He had made his directorial debut on All American and came back to direct in season seven after stepping down as a series lead.

That season seven return kept his link to the show intact. The CW had renewed All American for a shortened seventh season in 2024. Spencer was no longer the central character, and Michael Evans Behling, who plays Jordan Baker, moved to No. 1 on the call sheet, the daily cast list that signals top billing.

Ezra stayed close. His voice as Spencer was heard in the season seven premiere. He said at the time he still planned to keep Spencer's presence alive. Talking about the final farewell, he told Deadline: “He'll Be With Me Forever.”

The schedule was tight. Around the finale, Ezra was in Atlanta filming the Netflix series All the Sinners Bleed. He travelled back to direct and to shoot his final scene as Spencer.

For fans, this means the ending honours where the story started. Ezra reached 100 episodes as Spencer with the May 27 episode in season six. He then handed the team to a new generation. Now he closes it himself, from behind the camera and in front of it.
