Tom Pearson signs new Saints deal with England return in mind

Northampton Saints have kept hold of Tom Pearson. The Prem title holders — champions of England's top flight — confirmed on 29 September that the 26-year-old has signed a new deal running beyond this season, BBC Sport reported.

Pearson plays in the back row. That means flanker, one of the hard-running, hard-tackling forwards who chase turnovers at the breakdown, the contest for the ball on the ground after a tackle.

He has become a fixture at Franklin's Gardens. Pearson has made more than 60 appearances for Saints since joining in the summer of 2023.

His route to Northampton was an unhappy one. He arrived after his former club London Irish went out of business. He had won his solitary England cap in the months before that move.

Since then, trophies have followed. Pearson helped Saints win two domestic crowns in three years at the club. He started both final victories, against Bath in 2024 and against Exeter last season.

That record explains why Saints were keen to keep him. He is 26, durable, and already trusted for the biggest matches.

England recognition has proved slower to return. Pearson has featured for England's second-string national side in each of the past two campaigns, but has not added to that one senior cap.

Getting back in is driving him. Pearson said his ambition to return to the England set-up was part of what convinced him to stay at Northampton.
