Jennifer Lawrence will star in The Flood, a sci-fi thriller from Zach Cregger due in cinemas on 11 August 2028. A sci-fi thriller blends imagined science or technology with suspense. The date claims a late-summer slot almost two years from now.

The project comes from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, with Cregger set to write, produce and direct, as reported by Variety. That means he controls the script, the shoot and a producing stake in how the film gets made. Amblin Entertainment will produce alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Story details are being kept under wraps, according to Deadline, so no plot, character or setting has been made public. Producers guide a project from development to release, hiring key staff and managing budget and schedule.

Cregger heads into the film on a strong run. His horror feature Weapons spent four consecutive weeks at No. 1 at the domestic box office, the United States and Canada. It has earned $270 million worldwide, as reported on 29 September 2026 by Deadline. That figure counts ticket sales from all markets combined. His Resident Evil for Sony and Constantin has passed $200 million at the global box office.

Awards voters have noticed as well. Amy Madigan won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Aunt Gladys in Weapons. The Academy Awards are voted on by film professionals and are the industry's best-known honours. The story of Aunt Gladys will continue in the upcoming film Gladys.

Lawrence arrives with a full slate of her own. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Die My Love. The Golden Globes are voted on by entertainment journalists and often spotlight work ahead of awards season. Excellent Cadaver will produce What Happens at Night, which is set to star Lawrence alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and be directed by Martin Scorsese.

For fans, this means a wait. It also points to scale. A mid-August release puts The Flood in the school-holiday stretch when cinemas programme big crowd titles. Plot secrecy adds to the build-up, leaving casting as the clearest clue to tone for now.
