Christopher Abbott calls D23 Professor X reveal a dream and a nightmare

Christopher Abbott walked out as Professor X to muted applause and blank faces.
The actor called his unveiling as Marvel’s new leader of the X-Men “a bit of a dream and a nightmare,” in an interview with New York Magazine reported on 30 September 2026 by Variety. Abbott will play Professor X, the powerful telepath who leads the mutant team, in Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot. The film is scheduled for release in May 2028.
Abbott said he strode on stage at Disney’s D23 fan showcase with real enthusiasm. He quickly felt that many in the audience did not know who he was. The applause sounded soft, so he dropped a planned fist pump and settled for a nod instead.
In a video clip of the conversation posted by New York Magazine, Abbott told interviewer Samuel Hine he had sweated through the moment. The clip captures the same mix of excitement and nerves. Hine led the interview for the magazine’s chat series.
What makes this stand out is the candour. Big franchise reveals are usually all smiles. Abbott described the nerves in plain terms.
He was not unveiled alone. Inde Navarrette was announced as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm and Adam Driver as villain Mr. Sinister alongside Abbott, according to Variety. D23 is Disney’s large fan event in California, where its studios bring out stars, show new footage and confirm casting. Marvel Studios used the August 2026 edition to present its mutant team together on stage.
Three other leads had already been made public. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, the telekinetic mutant. Kit Connor will play Cyclops, the team’s visor-wearing field leader. Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost, the telepath often known as the White Queen.
The new film is still untitled. It is due in theatres on 5 May 2028, according to Marvel. A reboot here means a fresh cast and a fresh start, not a continuation of the earlier films. It will be the first big-screen relaunch of the team since Fox’s Dark Phoenix in 2019.
