Control Resonant Left Out Yellow Paint on Purpose

Control Resonant director Mikael Kasurinen says the game leaves out yellow guide paint on purpose. "It was a conscious decision, obviously," he said on the Dropped Frames podcast, as reported via Kotaku Eurogamer. The remarks were covered on 30 September 2026 after the podcast appearance.
Yellow paint is developer shorthand for bright dabs of colour placed on ledges, ladders and broken walls to show where to go next. The paint is meant to read instantly, even in a dark or busy scene. It is a simple way to tell players where to climb, jump or push through.
Kasurinen said that sense of working it out matters for a good game. Player autonomy is important, he said, and players should feel they make decisions and figure things out for themselves. Signposting that is too visible, he argued, would have worked against those design goals.
That does not mean the colour never appears. Control Resonant does use yellow on certain objects in the world, but the finish is organic and industrial, closer to a shipping yard or a factory floor than a trail of markers. The colour sits inside the setting. It does not float above it telling players where to jump.
Scale is part of the context. Control Resonant has a larger map than the original Control. The first game took place inside an office building and guided players largely with diegetic signs, meaning signs that exist naturally inside the fictional world.
The approach differs from Marvel's Wolverine, which uses white paint to mark ledges that boost the player's jump and walls the player can climb. Developer Insomniac Games has also added an option to turn off scent trails, a tracking aid that highlights a path, in most situations. Players who prefer less help can switch much of that aid off.
Remedy Entertainment announced CONTROL Resonant on 12 December 2025, with a planned launch in 2026 Remedy. The studio shared new gameplay details announced on 13 February 2026, then announced on 2 June 2026 that the game would launch worldwide on 24 September. The game released on 24 September 2026, when the studio confirmed it is out now.
What makes this stand out is how much a splash of paint can change the mood. For fans, this means fewer prompts, more wrong turns, and the quiet satisfaction of finding the way alone.
