Edi Gathegi joins Miami Vice '85 as small-time crook

Edi Gathegi is headed for 1980s Miami. The actor has joined Universal Pictures' Miami Vice '85 as a small-time crook with big-time ambitions who is in over his head, The Hollywood Reporter reported on 30 September 2026. In plain terms, a working criminal reaching higher than he can handle.

He joins Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler as James Crockett. The wider ensemble includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak and Camila Morrone. Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo and Andrew Schulz are also in the cast, with Joseph Kosinski directing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story stays close to its source. The film will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami. It takes its cue from the pilot episode, the opening instalment that launched the television series, and it is produced by Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions alongside Kosinski, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Production is eyeing a November start. Shoots are planned in New York and Miami, giving the production two coastal bases for street work and location filming. The film will be shot for Imax, the giant-screen format with extra-large screens and specially built cameras, ahead of a cinema release set by Universal Pictures for 19 May 2028, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gathegi is familiar to superhero fans. He played Mr Terrific in James Gunn's Superman. He will return as the character in Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Filming on that sequel has wrapped, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That puts Miami Vice '85 next in his diary.

Universal Pictures lists Miami Vice '85 in its upcoming line-up and maintains an official page for the film, according to Universal Pictures.

For fans, this means another familiar face in an already busy crew. A street-level crook puts Gathegi outside the badge and inside the mess.
