André Holland Joins Universal's Miami Vice '85 Cast

André Holland has joined the cast of Universal's Miami Vice '85, Deadline reported in an exclusive published on 6 October 2026. An exclusive means that outlet was first to report the news.

Holland joins a film led by Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, Deadline reported. Jordan will play Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs and Butler will play James "Sonny" Crockett, Variety reported in April. The two men are the Miami detectives at the centre of the story. Old viewers will know the names. New viewers will meet them fresh.

No details have been given for Holland's part. His character is under wraps, Deadline reported. His place in the story is secret. Studios often hold back such details before filming starts.

The wider cast already announced includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez and Walton Goggins, Deadline reported. That builds a large ensemble around the two leads. No character details for that group have been disclosed. Each new addition fills out the world around Tubbs and Crockett.

Joseph Kosinski will direct from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, Deadline reported. The director guides the creative work on set and in post-production. The writer provides the script that cast and crew follow. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. Dylan Clark will produce through Dylan Clark Productions alongside Kosinski. The producer oversees the organisation, from budget to delivery.

The film takes its inspiration from "Brother's Keeper," the pilot episode of the Miami Vice television series, Deadline reported. A pilot is the opening episode made to launch a series. That episode aired on 16 September 1984. The '85 in the title points back to that mid-1980s era.

Universal plans to release the film on 19 May 2028, Deadline reported. The date is set. It will be filmed for IMAX, the giant-screen format with a very large screen and powerful sound for theatres. Universal lists Miami Vice '85 on its Universal Pictures official movie page and includes it in its Upcoming Movies lineup.

What makes this stand out is the steady build. One name joins. Then another. Holland is the latest piece in a large cast taking shape for 2028. A release date tells cinemas when to hold a slot and tells audiences when to look out for the film.
