Coven Academy starts classes on 1 October on Freeform.

The supernatural YA drama, YA meaning fiction aimed at teenagers and young adults, premieres at 8:00 p.m. EDT/PDT, according to the channel Freeform. It follows three young witches navigating burgeoning powers and friendship. Classes are in session.

The 21-part series opens in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was created by Tim Federle, the writer-producer previously behind High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, who also serves as executive producer, meaning he oversees the show creatively Variety. The programme was originally intended for Disney+ before finding its home at Freeform, its corporate sibling aimed at older teens and young adults.

Malina Weissman leads the cast as Briar Roberts. Ora Duplass plays Tegan, a witch with timeshifting abilities, while Jordan Leftwich plays Sasha, an empath who reads the emotions of others. Malachi Barton appears as Jake, a warlock, alongside Louis Thresher as Ollie, an Uber driver caught up in the story. Tiffani Thiessen completes the central line-up as Emma Graves, headmistress of Crescent Veil.

Episodes run short. The 21 instalments range from 10 to 22 minutes in length, a span that covers quick chapters and longer, more traditional-length outings. Two mid-season titles have been made public as Episode 11, "The Night It Happened", and Episode 12, "Between Worlds". Freeform released a teaser trailer, meaning a brief first preview, in August ahead of the October launch.

What makes this stand out is the fit. The series caters more squarely to a teen audience than Disney Channel fare, according to earlier reporting on Disney's next generation of stars. For viewers, that means an older skew, shorter episodes organised around friendship and powers, and a cable home rather than a Disney+ original.

For fans, this means a quick entry point. No long hour-long episodes to start. Just three witches, one school and a city with its own supernatural history. Variety's review described the result as intriguing and heartfelt, with sinister elements.
