The original Broadway stars of Hadestown are returning to the story together, on film.

The five leads reunited in London in 2025 to capture the musical for cinemas. Creator Anaïs Mitchell described the shoot in an interview published on 1 October 2026. It was filmed live at the Lyric Theatre across three performances.

That means the stage show was performed in front of a paying audience while cameras recorded it. The result is being released as Hadestown: The Musical.

The film stars André de Shields as Hermes, Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, Amber Gray as Persephone and Patrick Page as Hades, according to WhatsOnStage. All five created their roles in the original Broadway production.

Behind the camera, it was a joint effort. Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound directed the screen capture alongside stage director Rachel Chavkin. Sullivan handles live performance filming. Chavkin directed the stage production.

Mitchell began writing Hadestown in her early twenties. She is now a Grammy winner and the show’s writer. Asked about songwriting, she said writers are “all out here recycling the same handful of notes and trying to find meaning in them”.

There is a real-life thread in the casting too. Noblezada and Carney met doing the show. They got engaged in London and later married.

For fans, this means a chance to see that first Broadway company together again. Short and sweet. No travel to New York required.

The release has already rolled out in stages. The filmed capture held its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in New York in June. It then began a limited theatrical run in North America on 24 July 2026.

Next come the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The film opens in cinemas in those four countries on 13 October, with tickets now on sale, according to Hadestown UK.
