Michael McDonald meets biological son placed for adoption as a teen

Michael Goessling, a 59-year-old man from St Louis who was adopted as a baby, has met his biological father: Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald.
The pair reconnected about a year and a half ago, Billboard reported on 2 October 2026. Goessling had not known his birth parents until last year.
He received a letter saying they wanted to meet him. His first conversation with McDonald was over the phone.
McDonald was 14 when the child was conceived with his middle-school girlfriend. Both parents were 14 at the time, and they placed the child for adoption.
Local reporting traces the breakthrough to a DNA test that identified McDonald as Goessling's biological father. Goessling then made contact, and the two later met in St Louis, according to Entertainment Weekly.
That meeting closed a gap of almost six decades. Goessling was adopted as an infant and grew up without knowledge of his birth parents.
McDonald went on to replace Tom Johnston as the lead singer of the Doobie Brothers. He has won five Grammy Awards, and the band's "What A Fool Believes" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the United States singles chart.
What makes this stand out is its ordinariness. No search through fame. A letter, a phone call, then a trip to St Louis. Two families learning each other late.
