Sebastian Stan calls Batman sequel role his toughest challenge

Sebastian Stan says his secret role in The Batman: Part II ranks among the most challenging jobs he has taken on.
The actor described the part during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, in comments reported on 5 October 2026. He called the sequel a very ambitious project and said he hopes it lands right, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Stan said he has faith in the film because director Matt Reeves is truly a genius and knows what he is doing. He added that the role feels very different from anything he has done before. That is a striking claim from an actor realised by audiences over many years of Marvel screen work.
He got the job after a direct nudge. Stan said he contacted DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, a move he described as poking the bear. He had long assumed a DC film was unlikely, almost a joke, given his longtime association with Marvel, which makes the big-screen superhero stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The conversation moved forward after Reeves saw The Apprentice. Stan said Reeves liked his work in that film, which led to talks about the Batman sequel and then to casting.
Plot and character details remain tightly held. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Scarlett Johansson has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role. The film currently has a release date of 18 February 2028.
Production in London has paused temporarily while Reeves deals with a personal family matter, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Stan has been rumoured to play Harvey Dent, the Gotham prosecutor who becomes Two-Face, but the role is unconfirmed. His casting was first reported as talks in January 2026, with the character undisclosed at the time.
For fans, this means waiting a little longer for answers. Stan is talking openly about the scale of the task while giving nothing away about who he plays.
