Shevchenko's son starts senior career with seventh-tier Sholing

The son of a Ballon d'Or winner is starting again in the seventh tier.
Kristian Shevchenko, 19, has signed a permanent deal with Sholing FC, the Southampton-based club confirmed. The move was reported on 6 October. BBC
Shevchenko is the son of Andriy Shevchenko, the former AC Milan, Chelsea and Dynamo Kyiv striker. His father retired in 2012 after winning the 2003 Champions League with Milan and the Ballon d'Or in 2004, the annual award for the best men's player in the world.
Kristian came through academy football in England. He spent time with Chelsea and Tottenham before joining Watford in July 2023, according to Sholing's announcement. He most recently played for Watford's under-21 team, essentially a development squad for young pros, and was released by the Championship club in May. BBC
Sholing play in the Southern League Premier Division South. That sits at the seventh tier of English football, well below the Premier League and Football League, in what fans call non-league. The club are nicknamed the Boatmen and are managed by Paul Doswell.
It is a different world from academy football. Sholing's squad includes Brad Targett, younger brother of Newcastle defender Matt Targett. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is also listed as an associate director and community ambassador at the club.
The timing mattered. Sholing announced the signing on its official channels ahead of an FA Cup third-round qualifying tie that weekend, the stage where non-league clubs fight to reach the first round proper. The club described it as his first professional contract. Sholing FC
What makes this stand out is the contrast. Most 19-year-olds leaving a second-tier academy disappear quietly on loan or into development football. Shevchenko has chosen senior football, quickly, in front of small crowds where every touch counts.
For fans, this means a name to watch. He arrives without first-team minutes and with a famous surname. Sholing get a young forward hungry to prove himself. He gets a proper start.
