Robbie Savage started as Peterborough manager with four goals in nine minutes and a blunt message for his players: change the mentality.

Posh beat Ipswich Town Under-21s 4-1 in his first game in charge. The tie was in the EFL Trophy, the cup competition for third and fourth-tier clubs plus academy sides, and the burst of four first-half goals settled it fast, BBC Sport reported.

Savage spoke afterwards to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. He challenged the squad to end a run of underachieving. Talent was not the issue. Mindset was.

It was quite an entrance. Savage had left National League side Forest Green only last week to take the Peterborough job. The club said his personality, character and mindset was something it needed “top to bottom” when it confirmed his appointment, Peterborough United announced.

The win also did a job. It put Peterborough into the last 32 of the Trophy. They know this competition well. They won it for a joint-record third time in 2025.

For fans, this means an early lift. A new manager, a big scoreline, and a cup run to defend.

The harder test comes next. Savage takes charge of his first league game on Saturday. It is away at Leicester City in League One, England’s third tier. That will say more about where this team is heading.
