Jagex pulls Dragon Slayer II trailer after AI art complaints

Jagex has pulled its Dragon Slayer II trailer offline after players spotted what looked like generative AI art in it.
The trailer was made for the RuneScape 3 Dragon Slayer 2 quest and debuted during RuneFest last weekend, according to Video Games Chronicle. It did not stay up long. Fans began pausing on details that did not look right.
Two shots drew the most attention. In one, a knight appeared to have six fingers. In another, a leaping knight seemed to wear a modern pair of trainers. Both were flagged by viewers as telltale signs of AI generation, a term for images or video made by software trained on large datasets rather than drawn by hand.
Jagex marketing director Alec Sween addressed the row in a statement on the official RuneScape Reddit page. He said the trailer was produced by an external partner that had explicitly confirmed generative AI would not be used.
The studio said the partner broke that rule without its knowledge. Jagex added that it does not use generative AI to create its games, artwork or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on its behalf.
This was not the first breach. Jagex acknowledged a partner had violated its anti-AI rule before the Dragon Slayer II incident. A week earlier, clothing company 100 Thieves apologised for teasing a RuneScape collaboration concept piece that used AI.
For fans, this means a wait for a replacement. Jagex said it is overhauling its review processes following RuneFest. It also plans to work with and commission community creators to tell the story of Dragon Slayer II, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
