The blank DMZ menu line that got Call of Duty fans talking

One empty menu box has set Call of Duty fans talking.
At 7:34 in episode seven of From the Ward, a developer video diary, the DMZ deployment screen shows four options. Three are talked through on camera. The fourth, labelled Single Squad Mission, appears with no on-screen description at all, according to Eurogamer.
That episode focused entirely on DMZ. It landed as part of a week of Modern Warfare 4 briefings that included a first look at the mode and insight into developer Infinity Ward's guiding philosophy.
DMZ is an extraction mode, where small teams enter a large map, gather gear and intelligence, then get out alive. The official Modern Warfare 4 site calls it the definitive Call of Duty extraction experience, a living combat sandbox where every deployment starts a new story, according to Call of Duty.
The mystery deepened with the next trailer. The DMZ Dynamic Ops trailer, published on 6 October 2026, spotlights one of the four deployment options. Its version of the deployment screen does not show Single Squad at all.
Fans noticed. Players on Reddit and X debated what Single Squad Mission means, with some tagging the official Call of Duty account to ask directly. One theory is a PvE-only playlist, with no rival human squads. The other is a single-squad lobby, one team alone on the map but still facing computer-controlled enemies.
Infinity Ward has not said whether Modern Warfare 4's DMZ will offer a PvE-only playlist.
There is plenty that is confirmed. The setting is Hajin and its Exclusion Zone. An official DMZ Deep Dive guide covers deployment progression, the HUD and Tac-Map, enemy forces, vehicles, after-action reports, major points of interest and deployment stories. One encounter type, Lieutenant Hunts, is high risk. Defeat a Lieutenant, take the Dog Tag and extract safely for the hunt to count.
Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted a level difference. The player profile shows level 5 in the From the Ward video, compared with level 28 in the Dynamic Ops trailer.
For fans, this means a short wait for answers. The full movement system is expected across Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ and Call of Duty: Warzone. On PC, the game will be available via Xbox on PC, Battle.net and Steam, according to Call of Duty.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to release on 23 October 2026. Call of Duty: NEXT, the series showcase for reveals, developer interviews and live play, has served as the central hub for Modern Warfare 4 news. Two trailers arrived back to back, the DMZ Worldbuilder Trailer on 5 October and the Dynamic Ops trailer on 6 October.
