Solo players taking on a DMZ Story Mission for the first time in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 may now be playing without other people in the match, according to Eurogamer. Infinity Ward, the studio behind the game, has not officially announced the change.

DMZ is the game's extraction mode. Squads drop into a map, gather loot and try to leave alive. Infinity Ward has said it is designed as a PvPvE experience, short for player-versus-player-versus-environment, meaning fights with other players and with computer-controlled enemies happen in the same match.

Players have asked for servers with no player-versus-player fighting for as long as DMZ has been available. Some want a calmer way to learn the map and the story without other squads around them.

At launch, DMZ Story Missions held fewer players than other modes. They still allowed encounters with other players, which could lead to fights a solo player did not want. According to Eurogamer's report, the first attempt at a Story Mission by a solo player now appears to be private. Repeat attempts are harder and are not private. Eurogamer also reported a suggestion that players may still meet others in a Story Mission.

The change comes during an active launch period. DMZ Early Access began on October 20, 2026, according to the official Call of Duty DMZ page. The studio's launch patch, dated October 29, 2026, addressed issues in Multiplayer and DMZ, and it included the first weapon tuning update for Multiplayer, according to the patch notes.

Season 1 adds further DMZ content. It includes a new DMZ map called X01, new weapons and attachments, and new Operator Skins, Weapon Blueprints and DMZ Survival Kits. Warzone, the game's battle royale mode, is also part of Season 1, and the DMZ map Hajin is coming to Battle Royale with two new Warzone maps, the studio said in an August blog post.

Story Missions are a central thread of the game's narrative. Players can take them on, face new threats and earn rewards, the official DMZ page says. Whether the private first-attempt setup stays, changes or gets a formal name is not yet known. Players who want a clear answer will need to wait for Infinity Ward to speak on the matter.
