Prince William Gives 80-Year-Old Fan a Birthday She Waited a Lifetime For

The Prince of Wales gave an 80-year-old fan a birthday meeting she had waited a lifetime for.
Jamila Akhtar met Prince William outside the Sweet Surprise cafe in Ilminster, Somerset, on 7 October. She was celebrating her 80th birthday on the same day. She told him she had waited 80 years to meet a member of the Royal Family, Hello Magazine reported.
William stopped to talk to her as he met people gathered outside the cafe. He bent down to shake her hands so they could speak face to face. He wished her a happy 80th birthday. He asked if she had cake and candles to celebrate.
It was a short exchange. It left her in tears of happiness. She took in the moment with her daughter, Banah Brook, who was with her for the meeting.
Brook said the two of them had waited an hour and a half to see William pass through. An hour and a half is a long wait on any street. On your 80th birthday, it is longer still. She said he truly made their day.
Her words summed up the mood in the small crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of him. People had lined the street outside the cafe. They wanted a handshake or a hello. Akhtar got both, plus a birthday wish.
William was in Somerset to launch a new project with the National Emergencies Trust. The Trust is an independent charity that works with community groups and local organisations when emergencies strike. The visit brought him to Sweet Surprise, a cafe that provides opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.
The cafe stop was part of a day focused on how local places respond in tough times. William spent time inside meeting staff and supporters. Outside, he took time to greet well-wishers who had waited along the street.
What makes this stand out is how small the gestures were. A bend to reach her hands. A birthday wish. A quick question about cake. For a woman marking eight decades, that was enough.
She came for a glimpse. She left with tears of joy and a birthday story to tell. Eighty years of waiting ended with a handshake and a smile.
