Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales arrived in South Belfast on Friday, 9 October for a surprise one-day visit to Northern Ireland. No details were published in advance. The focus was homelessness.

Their first stop was The Commons on Ormeau Road, a church being transformed into a community centre. The engagement was reported by Hello! Magazine. The whole visit was held under a strict security blackout until the couple were on the ground.

The day centred on Homewards, Prince William's long-term programme to end homelessness by joining up local groups, services and employers. In Belfast they met organisations and young people working toward that goal. The conversations were practical and local.

Rain greeted them. Catherine carried a black umbrella as they arrived and spoke to hosts. It did not cut the programme short.

It was their first visit to Northern Ireland since October last year. That October 2025 trip fell on 14 October, when both were 43, according to People. It included meetings with recently qualified firefighters and visits to farms, as reported by the BBC.

Northern Ireland has become a regular stop for the couple. In October 2022 they made a surprise trip with stops in Belfast and Carrickfergus. That visit included PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland, a charity based in north Belfast that works across communities in the city, and a light moment when they took part in a cocktail-making race at a market. Prince William was back in June 2023 at East Belfast Mission as part of his tour for the Homewards campaign.

Earlier still, when they were known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, they spent 27-28 February 2019 in Belfast, Fermanagh and Ballymena on a two-day trip celebrating young people of Northern Ireland.

For anyone following their work, the pattern is familiar. They arrive unannounced, keep the schedule tight, and spend the time with frontline groups. This time the rain made the pictures, but the paperwork was about housing.
