Paramount to take Cyberpunk 2077 from Night City to the big screen

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, the action-adventure role-playing game from Poland-based developer CD Projekt Red, Deadline reported on 8 October 2026.
Live action means real actors on real sets, rather than animation. A role-playing game, often shortened to RPG, is a story-driven game in which players take on a character and make choices that shape the plot.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce the film. He will work alongside CD Projekt Red, which holds the franchise rights and is therefore the company that controls how the property can be used on screen, according to Deadline.
The game is set in Night City, a fictional metropolis in California. It is a crowded, neon-lit city of fixers, mercenaries and corporate power struggles. That setting is the shared starting point for the film.
The numbers behind it are large. The original game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. Its expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has sold 15 million copies, Deadline reported.
The project adds to a run of game adaptations at Paramount. The studio is co-producing, which means sharing costs and production duties, on an upcoming Street Fighter adaptation with Legendary that is due on 16 October. It also has a Call of Duty film with Peter Berg directing and Taylor Sheridan writing.
What makes this stand out is the size of the audience that already knows Night City. For fans, this means a familiar city built for controllers is now being rebuilt for cameras. For newcomers, it is a straight science-fiction set-up: one city, high technology, low odds.
