X-Men '97 will return for Season 3 on Disney+, with Marvel revealing a first-look clip at New York Comic Con. Variety

The renewal was announced as the convention opened its 2026 run. New York Comic Con 2026 runs Thursday, 8 October through Sunday, 11 October, according to Marvel's schedule guide. Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise, presented the footage during the Marvel panel.

The clip opens on graffiti asking, "Where are the X-Men?" Police have sealed off the city and closed the border. Mutants cannot reach Professor X's school without letters of transit, meaning official travel papers.

A young mutant tries to sneak across. A team intervenes to rescue the child. Asked if they are the X-Men, they answer: "No, we're the brotherhood."

That line points to a shift in who protects mutants. The footage then cuts to Storm and Professor Charles Xavier driving together and discussing conflict with the United States president. It ends on a very different note. Gambit and Rogue, a fan-favourite couple, marry with Deadpool and She-Hulk among the guests.

The setup follows directly from Season 2, which aired its finale on 12 August. Variety In that finale, Mystique was revealed to have killed X-Factor leader Valerie Cooper and taken her identity. It was also revealed that Mystique's non-mutant son, Graydon Creed, had been elected president of the United States.

Season 2 scattered the X-Men across time and introduced Apocalypse as its antagonist. In an episode set in ancient Egypt, Apocalypse kills Magneto despite efforts by Xavier and his heroes to stop him. The season also widened the field beyond the core team.

One new group is X-Factor, a government-sanctioned team that includes Polaris, Magneto's daughter. The other is X-Force, a rogue team led by Cable, the son of Cyclops and Jean Grey who travelled back in time from the future.

Gambit and Rogue sit at the centre of that story. Season 1 killed Gambit. Season 2 brought him back as one of Apocalypse's Horsemen, meaning mind-controlled servants. Rogue then saves Gambit by harnessing the power of a Celestial, a giant cosmic being, while Nightcrawler trades places with her and sacrifices himself to keep Rogue alive.

For long-term viewers, the wedding lands because of that history. The series continues the story of X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran on Fox Kids from 1992 to 1997. The revival debuted in 2024 and revisits that 1990s timeline with new stories.

For fans, this means a clearer picture of where Season 3 is headed. A missing X-Men team, a closed city and a new president set the conflict. A wedding suggests at least one payoff survives it.

Work on the new season has been public for some time. At New York Comic Con in 2025, Winderbaum confirmed that Season 3 was already in the works, according to a recap published by Marvel.
