Chile will bring the sky down to earth as the spotlight country at the Frankfurt book fair in 2027.

The country presented its plans on 8 October during Frankfurter Buchmesse 2026, under the theme “Chile: Astros de Tierra.” The fair, held each autumn in Frankfurt, Germany, is the world’s largest trade meeting for publishers, where rights to publish books in other languages and territories are bought and sold. A Guest of Honour, meaning one country given a dedicated pavilion and a year-long programme of authors and events, sits at the centre of each fair. Chile’s central idea is to join sky and earth together. The project is led by the Ministry of Cultures, with Nicolas Leyton Gallego as executive director. Chile's Ministry of Cultures

The preview brought together Leyton Gallego, Chile’s ambassador to Germany Jorge Sandrock and Frankfurter Buchmesse president Juergen Boos. Authors María José Ferrada and Alejandra Costamagna also took part in the press conference.

Chile arrived in Frankfurt this year with 13 authors, six translators and 36 book-sector representatives, a group spanning publishers and other book workers. The delegation took part in the Latam Stage programme. That stage was created to mark 50 years since the fair’s first thematic focus on Latin America in 1976.

The numbers sketch a busy home market. Chile has 609 publishing houses and more than 100,000 titles in circulation. Digital formats, meaning ebooks and other electronic editions, accounted for 23% of ISBN registrations in Chile in 2024. An ISBN, or International Standard Book Number, is the code that identifies each edition of a book for sale and cataloguing.

Reading holds steady. In Chile, 81.5% of the population reads for pleasure or leisure, averaging 5.5 books per year. The country has 340 libraries, plus a Digital Public Library recording more than two million loans a year.

Translation is part of the push. Translating Chile was set up in 2017 by the Division of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to help foreign publishers translate and produce books by Chilean authors. Between 2024 and 2026, German and Italian were the most frequent target languages, followed by Portuguese, Turkish, French and Slovenian.

What makes this stand out for general readers is the bridge between the book trade and the wider public programme. A Guest of Honour year usually brings more translations, more touring authors and a highly visible pavilion.

The 2027 fair will run from 6 to 10 October 2027. It will be the 79th edition of the fair. Frankfurter Buchmesse Chile will be the fourth Latin American country to hold the Guest of Honour role.
