The Prince and Princess of Wales turned up unannounced in Belfast on Friday, Oct. 9, and walked straight into the rain.

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were greeted on arrival by Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, Belfast mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly and South Belfast MP Claire Hanna, according to Hello!. The visit was kept under a strict security blackout until the couple appeared.

The weather did most of the talking at first. Little-Pengelly shook William's hand in the downpour and joked that it "wasn't playing ball."

Catherine held a black umbrella. She turned to the deputy first minister and said: "I'll share my umbrella with you."

William was keen to get everyone out of it. He tapped Catherine on the arm and steered her toward the door. "We'll go in," he said. Then, to Catherine: "Or we'll get you soaking wet."

Small moment. Big warmth. It set the tone for the day.

The reason for the trip was Prince William's Homewards initiative, his long-running project aimed at ending homelessness. This was the first time Catherine had joined him for a Homewards outing, according to Hello!.

In Belfast, the couple met employers, frontline organisations and young people involved in the New Employment Opportunities Network, known as NEON, which helps young people affected by homelessness into work, the BBC reported.

The visit was a surprise. The couple, both 44, had not announced the trip in advance, People reported. Their last visit to Northern Ireland was in October 2025.

What makes this stand out is how ordinary it looked. No red carpet. Just wet coats, one umbrella, and a quick dash for cover before getting down to work.
