Phoebe Bridgers reunites with boygenius for A24 Sound Check session

Phoebe Bridgers is back with her boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus for a filmed set in a small New York theatre.
The performance was directed by Lance Oppenheim for Sound Check at Cherry Lane Theater, the live video series from film studio A24, according to Pitchfork. It reunites Bridgers with Oppenheim behind the camera for an intimate shoot after weeks of arena shows.
The session centres on two boygenius songs. Bridgers performs “Lost Boys” and “Haunted” with Baker and Dacus, the three singers who record and tour together under the boygenius name. The set also includes “On Video,” Bridgers’ song from the Primetime soundtrack, performed with songwriter and producer Ethan Gruska.
It was filmed at Cherry Lane Theater in the West Village, an off-Broadway venue built for small audiences, in contrast to large commercial Broadway houses. The shoot followed Bridgers’ three-night run at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in September. That run formed part of her Lost Tour, which is billed as phones-free.
The arena run already had a boygenius moment. Baker and Dacus joined Bridgers on stage on the first night at Barclays Center for “Not Strong Enough” and “Cool About It.” A report on the 24 September show documented the joint appearance in Brooklyn.
The Cherry Lane session is the latest instalment in a new series. Sound Check at Cherry Lane Theatre was launched by A24, A24 Music and Cherry Lane Theatre, with Tame Impala as the kick-off performer, according to Hypebeast. Bridgers’ episode follows editions featuring Tame Impala and Blood Orange, the project of British musician Devonté Hynes.
For fans, this means a close-up view of a collaboration that is usually seen on much larger stages. The Cherry Lane room holds a fraction of an arena crowd, and the filming keeps the focus on the musicians in the space.
Bridgers has had a busy September beyond touring. She appears in Invitation 13, the directorial debut of musician Conor Oberst, which premiered in Los Angeles in September.
