Sadie Sink is in talks to star in and produce a film version of Emma Cline's novel The Guest, with Lorene Scafaria in talks to write and direct for A24 and Square Peg, Deadline reported.

A24 and Square Peg are in exclusive negotiations for the rights. That means other buyers step aside while these talks continue. Nothing is signed yet. All three elements — the rights deal, Sink's casting and Scafaria's hiring — remain in talks.

The bidding was crowded. Around a dozen other buyers chased the book before the Sink-Scafaria package prevailed, according to the same report. It was an organised contest for a recent bestseller with a clear screen hook.

The book centres on a calculating young drifter bluffing her way through a summer in the Hamptons. Cline's novel was published in 2024 by Penguin Random House. It was longlisted for the PEN/Faulkner Award and chosen as a Belletrist Book Club pick.

It also landed on more than a dozen best-books-of-the-year lists, Variety reported. Those lists included The New Yorker, Time, NPR and The Washington Post. That kind of spread gave the auction its heat.

Sink is best known to general viewers as a Stranger Things alum. Scafaria directed Hustlers and has worked on Succession. Sink would also produce alongside Square Peg if the deal closes.

For fans, this means patience. Books of this size often take years to reach cameras, and this one has not yet cleared the rights stage. If talks hold, the next steps would be a script, a schedule and a release plan.
