Nicolas Cage says True Detective is likely, Amazon return is not

Nicolas Cage says he will likely lead a season of HBO's True Detective — and will probably never work with Amazon again. He made both statements at a Spotlight panel at New York Comic-Con on 10 October, where he appeared while working on the film Perish. Deadline reported his remarks from the room.
Cage told the crowd a new season built around him is the probable outcome. True Detective is an anthology series, meaning each season tells a separate crime story with a new cast. Talks linking Cage to Season 5 have been running since 2025. He did not present it as a signed contract. He framed it as likely.
The Amazon split is about artificial intelligence. Cage said he refused to sign a waiver that would have allowed Amazon to use AI connected to Spider-Noir, his Prime Video series. A waiver in this context means written permission covering how a performance can be reused with AI tools. He called Amazon "very AI-friendly" and told the audience the organisation had invested $50 billion in OpenAI. "I'm not part of their club," he said, according to IGN. That refusal, in his telling, is why he probably will not work with Prime Video again.
Spider-Noir sits at the centre of that dispute. It is a live-action series starring Cage, and it was his first leading role in a television series. Sony and Prime Video set its launch for May, Reuters reported in February. The show lets viewers choose between colour and black-and-white, Reuters reported in May. The monochrome option is a nod to old detective pictures, a favourite reference point for stories about masked investigators.
Cage has talked around that comic-book world before. In a May interview with Variety, he discussed catching up with Breaking Bad long after its original run. He also recalled turning down the Green Goblin part in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films. And he recounted encouraging a young Johnny Depp to pursue acting.
For viewers, the takeaway is straightforward. Cage wants the HBO detective job. He does not want another Amazon job while AI terms look like this. One door is opening. The other is closing.
