President Donald Trump did not win the Nobel Peace Prize, and Saturday Night Live turned that loss into the opening joke of the night.

The gags came in the episode hosted by Shane Gillis, during Weekend Update, the show's long-running fake-news desk with anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che, according to Variety.

Jost opened with it straight. Trump had not won. He then played a rally clip in which Trump said the prize was given out by a liberal person who works at the United Nations who nobody has ever heard of.

Jost added that Trump was taking the defeat in stride. That was sarcasm.

From there, Jost ran through a list of reasons Trump still thought it was his year. He joked that Trump had kidnapped Venezuela's president and done so much war the United States is running out of missiles. The punchline was personal. Jost said expecting the Peace Prize on that record was like Jost himself expecting an Oscar for Tom & Jerry.

Che took the second half. He joked that this year's winner, South African human rights advocate Navi Pillay, learned of her win while at a conference in Germany. Pillay had joked that she would share the prize with Trump if the crowd clapped more, Che said.

Then came the sting. Che joked that Pillay's quip might lead Trump to bomb whatever country he thinks she's from.

The real prize behind the jokes went to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law, according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The 2026 Peace Prize was announced on 9 October by committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes. The announcement was part of the 2026 Nobel announcements scheduled for 5–12 October, according to the Nobel Prize organisation.

What makes this stand out is speed. The prize news broke on 9 October and SNL had a full Weekend Update routine built around it within days. For viewers, that rapid turnaround is the point of the desk. It reacts to the week's headlines while they are still fresh.
