Lightning forced Head Trip 2026 to close its first night early on Oct. 10, and the music did not resume.

The one-time-only dance music festival is held on the Coachella grounds in Indio, California, and is organised by Goldenvoice. The shutdown was confirmed after lightning was tracked moving into the Coachella Valley. Billboard

The interruption landed at 9 p.m. PT during the set by Under Construction, the duo made up of Fisher and Chris Lake. A stage announcement told the crowd the show was being suspended because of lightning. Calvin Harris was scheduled to headline from 9:30 p.m. PT, straight after that set.

That timing left a short gap between acts. The headliner slot, the final performance of the night, was due to begin 30 minutes after the suspension. With no restart, the night ended without that set going ahead.

Two collaborative sets had gone ahead earlier in the evening. They were Peggy Gou b2b Four Tet and Seth Troxler b2b Ben Sterling, with b2b meaning back-to-back, in which two DJs share the decks for a joint set. Those performances finished before the weather stopped the night.

People camping at the site were advised to shelter in vehicles as the storm approached. The lightning system moved into the valley while Tropical Storm Rachel was hitting the Southern California coast. Sheltering in vehicles is a standard safety step at open-air sites when lightning is close, as tents and open ground offer no protection.

The weather had already altered the schedule before the evening shutdown. Doors opened at 4 p.m., an hour later than the originally advertised 3 p.m. start. The closing time was also moved forward to 11 p.m. from the originally planned 1 a.m. curfew, the latest time music is permitted to run. The Desert Sun

Day two was still scheduled to feature DJ Harvey, The Blessed Madonna, Dom Dolla b2b Kettama, Skrillex and Swedish House Mafia. That second night forms the other half of the one-off weekend, which had been presented as a single edition rather than a returning festival.

For fans on site, this means a first night cut short with the headline performance lost to the suspension. What makes this stand out is how close the weather call came to the night's peak, with the stage cleared just as the programme was building toward its advertised close.
