Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are Tubbs and Crockett.

Universal has released the first official image of the pair as Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Detective James “Sonny” Crockett in Miami Vice ’85, its reboot of the 1980s police series, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. A first look is a studio-approved still issued during filming to introduce the cast in character. It is the first public view of the two leads together in costume.

Jordan takes the role of Tubbs. Butler, an Academy Award nominee, takes the role of Crockett, according to Variety. An Academy Award nomination is one of the most widely recognised honours in film. The parts were first played on television by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson.

The new film — a fresh screen version of an earlier story — carries the title Miami Vice ’85. For new viewers, a reboot simply means an older story realised again with a new cast and crew. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick. The script was written by Dan Gilroy.

The director guides performance and camera on set. The writer provides the screenplay that the cast and crew then film. The production is now under way. That phase, known in the trade as production, covers the main shoot before editing and finishing begin.

The cast around the two leads is large. Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, Walton Goggins and John Leguizamo are among the supporting names. Danny Ramirez, Andre Holland, Michael Irby and Whitney Peak also appear. Supporting players appear around the central duo and fill out the wider story. The film is being made for Universal, as reported by Deadline.

It is scheduled for theatrical release, meaning a debut in cinemas, on 19 May 2028, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A cinema date gives theatres the first window before any later home release. That date is more than a year away.

Miami Vice began life as an NBC television series. It starred Johnson and Thomas and ran for five seasons. A five-season run marks a long stay on network television. A film version followed in 2006, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
