Universal Reveals Butler and Jordan in Miami Vice '85
Universal has released the first images of Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan in Miami Vice '85. Butler appears as Detective James "Sonny" Crockett and Jordan as Detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, Deadline reported on 12 October 2026.
The pictures give the public its first concrete view of the new pairing. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, with a script by Dan Gilroy, according to the same report.
The ensemble around the two leads is large. Supporting cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez, Andre Holland, Michael Irby and Whitney Peak.
Universal has dated Miami Vice '85 for cinema release on 19 May 2028. The studio plans to release the film only in theatres, Yahoo reported.
The project is a reboot, a fresh screen version, of the 1980s NBC television series Miami Vice. The original show starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover Miami detectives, with Michael Mann serving as a director and executive producer. A previous film version in 2006 starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. The new story is described as exploring the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, Variety reported.
For fans, this means the long wait now has faces attached. Two years remain before release, but the costumes, casting and setting point clearly to the decade in the title.
