Catherine, Princess of Wales, and her 11-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte rode London's subway into the center of the city on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The pair took the Elizabeth Line, the newest route on the London Underground subway network known as the Tube, and sat alongside everyday passengers, according to People. The Princess of Wales, 44, wore a burgundy outfit with matching heels. They sat with other riders.

They reportedly got off at Tottenham Court Road, according to Town & Country. The stop sits near the West End, London's main theater district, and the British Museum. A security detail traveled with them and kept a deliberately low profile.

Fellow passengers noticed. Charlotte looked "amazed" during the ride, and both mother and daughter seemed "very relaxed," Yahoo News reported. Video of the trip later circulated online, including a clip published by The Sun.

The line they chose has family history. The Elizabeth Line is named for Queen Elizabeth II, Charlotte's great-grandmother. The late queen officially opened it in 2022 to mark her Platinum Jubilee, or 70 years on the throne, after 13 years of construction.

This was not the family's first trip underground. Catherine and her husband Prince William, the heir to the British throne, rode the Elizabeth Line together in May 2023 ahead of the coronation of King Charles III. Royal aides have said the couple occasionally use the Tube for private trips, and that 2023 outing included a stop at a London pub.

Theater trips have also been a mother-daughter pattern. In May 2023, Catherine brought Charlotte and a group of friends to a Saturday evening performance of Cinderella by the Royal Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada at the Royal Opera House in London. In 2018, she brought Charlotte, then a toddler, to a rehearsal performance of The Nutcracker at the same venue.

What makes this stand out is how ordinary it looked. For fans used to state cars and palace balconies, it was a short subway ride on a Saturday.
